Veronica Lopez visits the archaeological field work in Yecla (08/07/2008)

The director of the Institute for Youth, Veronica Lopez, accompanied by the Councillor for Youth of the City of Yecla, Monica Azorín, today visited the archaeological fieldwork 'ArqueoYecla 2008', located in the Monte Arabi, a prime rock art Levantine.

A total of 9 young people from different regions held during the month of July archaeological work.

The archaeological work that will develop young people focus on cleaning, excavation and graphic documentation of rock carvings in the field of cups and in the town of Arabilejo, the second millennium BC, with cleanup of the wall and stratigraphic study of the site.

The proceedings consist of field work and laboratory.

The fieldwork was carried out reconnaissance prospecting and reservoir: indications and planning surface excavation cuts.

Furthermore, in the process of excavation and analysis will be conducted stratigraphic and architectural structures, selective recording materials, surveying and photographic record of excavation and the newspaper.

Finally, laboratory work will be carried out cleaning and classification as well as centuries, inventory and material selection.

In the archaeological work involving nine young people between 18 and 26 years of five regions: Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Murcia and Basque Country, under the supervision of a monitoring team composed of the directors of excavation, Liborio Garcia, and the field, Alfonso Lopez, and two archaeologists, 17 trainees and one instructor.

With fields of work as director of the Institute of Youth, "young people know the importance of the recovery of the historical and cultural wealth of the region in a playful way and that, in addition to archaeological work, enjoy wide variety of leisure and free time "

During their stay, youth and cultural activities conducted ethnographic visits to different towns in the Region of Murcia, entertainment, evening, night out, environmental pathways for the town of Yecla and workshops on subjects complementary techniques applied to archaeological photography, surveying and mapping and restoration of archaeological materials, ceramics and metals.

The activities in the fields of work are intended to show participants that the Archaeology is a scientific method that is crucial to the historical interpretation of cultural periods where the written memory is scarce or nonexistent, and its proper use will depend most or lesser amount of data to obtain the material context in which they work, what to interpret aspects of economic activity, beliefs, food and domestic life.

Labor camps are part of the campaign 'Summer Youth 2008', launched by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through the Institute for Youth, with a wide range of sporting, cultural and leisure in shelters and camps, and volunteer work camps.

The total budget for this campaign is of 460,000 euros, of which the Youth Institute provides Caja Mediterráneo 370,000 to 90,000.

They also assist the Youth Council of the municipalities where they develop the various fields of work and the General Directorate of Natural Environment.
