A new reservoir at Yecla to 580 farmers will take advantage of the treatment plant reclaimed water in irrigation of the area (11/07/2012)

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerda, today signed a cooperation agreement with the mayor of Yecla, Mark Ortuño, and the presidents of the irrigation communities of the municipality of Santiago Pozo Mollidar-Portichuelo Hoya, and Francisco Vicente Gandía Bernal, for the construction of a dam that will facilitate the use for irrigation of reclaimed water from the plant.

The implementation of Yecla reservoir will take advantage of new volumes of treated water in the filter, storing them and making them available to crops during periods of irrigation, "thus promoting agricultural activity in the area and encouraging, at a later stage The modernization of irrigation schemes, "said the counselor.

The reservoir will have a capacity of 400,000 cubic meters of water, and include the necessary lines for filling and distribution of water to irrigators benefiting communities.

The works will involve an investment of 2.6 million, funded 75 percent by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).

The irrigation communities have benefited a total of 580 community members and a joint irrigable area over 4,000 hectares, mainly for the cultivation of vines, and to a lesser extent, stone and pome fruit trees and olive groves.

Cerda noted that 85 percent of the regional irrigable area is modernized, with more than 150,000 hectares in which it is implemented drip irrigation.

He further stated that "the General Plan drainage and water treatment has allowed available to agriculture in Murcia over 100 cubic hectometres additional tertiary treatment and purged with zero cost to the irrigators."

The Minister of Agriculture said that "agriculture is mainly irrigated Murcia," noting that "28 percent of fruits and vegetables that Spain exports come from the regional horticultural production."
