"Murcia, the community with the greatest lack of educational opportunities", according to IU-verdes Yecla (21/03/2018)

From the Municipal Group of IU-Greens we qualify as very serious the situation of the educational system in terms of equality of opportunities and equity of the students.

From the Municipal Group of IU-Greens we qualify as very serious the conclusions of the study on Educational Equity in Spain that place Murcia as the autonomous community with the greatest inequality and in which the socio-economic conditions of the students determine and condition their academic results.

There is no doubt that this is the inevitable effect of privatization policies and PP cuts in the region.

Budgetary cuts and trying to enhance the private system agreed upon to the detriment of the public education system, inevitably result in a cut also in the quality of the system that always precedes an increase in inequality of opportunities.

As it shows, it is worth the complaint that from IU-Greens at regional level was made weeks ago regarding the budgetary allocation destined to scholarships of dining room, that barely reaches to cases of extreme necessity and that keeps income levels so limited that leaves out to families of four members with a family income of 533 euros per month.

In turn, this is an immediate consequence of the situation of poverty and job insecurity in the region of Murcia.

As we have already reported on other occasions, the socio-economic situation of Murcian families with high rates of people at risk of social exclusion (34'8%, 7 points higher than the national average according to the VII EAPN-ES report) and extreme poverty (the third highest of the Autonomous Regions, 8'1%, higher than the national average, 1.7 points), directly conditions the academic results of our students, and if in addition, this situation is accompanied by budget cuts that limit compensatory policies, the result can not be other than an educational system unable to meet its objective of compensating for social inequalities and providing a quality education and educational excellence.

For all this, the conclusions of the report highlight measures such as those recently adopted by the Regional Ministry of Education to reinforce the 4th and 6th grade students in the last quarter of the school year, restrictive, partial measures, without continuity or planning and of which President López Miras presumed ridiculously.

Therefore, from our municipal group, we require the City Council to demand that the government of López Miras take immediate measures, put an end to budget cuts in education and promote effective measures that end with job insecurity and poverty in the region.
