A young woman from Yecla receives a scholarship to study a school year in France (12/02/2020)

From September, the life of María O., student of IES J. Martínez Ruiz (AZORÃN) of Yecla, will take a new direction.

This young woman will pack for a year in France, attending a public institute and living with a French family that will open the doors of her home.

María is one of the 12 students who have received a scholarship granted by AFS Intercultura, an international, non-profit and educational organization that promotes intercultural education.

This scholarship gives young people the opportunity to participate in a cultural immersion program in countries such as Germany, Slovakia, Italy, Indonesia, Poland, Czech Republic or Thailand.

Yesterday, Monday, February 11, the ceremony of delivering this distinction to Maria in the presence of her classmates took place, as well as an AFS volunteer in Murcia, Andrea L., and three young AFS students from Thailand, Turkey and Czech Republic.

The scholarship was awarded by Valeria Bettini, local manager of AFS in the Mediterranean-South area, who congratulated María for her dedication to studies and her desire to continue learning, even outside our borders.

During the event, Valeria highlighted the impact that an experience like this has on the future and on the personal and academic development of young people of this age.

“More than 96% of students participating with AFS * recognize that participating in the program has helped them to be a more flexible person with the ability to easily adapt to new situations, communicate and collaborate with people from different backgrounds and cultures, as well as improve your leadership, self-confidence and problem solving skills, â€says Valeria.

Each year, AFS Intercultura awards these scholarships and grants to young people who stand out for their academic career, for their interest, concern and willingness to discover and learn about their surroundings.

Since 1953, there have been more than 2,500 students from all over Spain who have benefited from the AFS scholarships and lived this experience full of challenges, learning and many benefits for their future.

Through these experiences, AFS is committed to an understanding between cultures and understanding between different people, thus approaching its ultimate goal of building more just and peaceful societies.

In the same way, the Region of Murcia also becomes the home of international students who arrive every year by the hand of AFS.

There are currently 11 young people from countries such as Germany, Australia, Czech Republic, Thailand, Turkey, Serbia or Switzerland, who live with Murcia families and are full of desire to live this intercultural experience, learn our language, customs and values.

Today, both our personal and work environment are influenced by globalization and internationalization.

Therefore, it becomes more necessary from earlier ages the ability to put ourselves in the shoes of the other, appreciate the differences of others and know what surrounds us.
