Youth from Yecla receive the second prize in the international youth history contest EUSTORY (27/10/2018)

The research draws attention to the economic, social and cultural losses that led to the closure of the Yecla train station

EUSTORY, the European history contest for young people, has recognized with a second prize an investigation about the impact of the arrival of the railway on Yecla (Murcia) and its people, made by eleven students of 4th of ESO of the San Francisco CC Assisi of this locality.

The work "La Huella del Chicharra.

Memory of an era "is embodied in a novel story and a small documentary that draws attention to the economic, social and cultural losses that led to the closure of the Yecla train station.

The jury highlighted the ability of synthesis and the use of ICT by the authors, granting them a second prize, worth € 1,000, €, which the students have collected in an event held yesterday in the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda.

Atypical in its approach, EUSTORY is held in parallel in 25 countries of the European continent and is different to introduce students to scientific research and encourage them to draw their own conclusions, leaving aside the mere description and memorization that often characterizes the teaching history in our country.

Moved by the motto of this contest, "another way of learning", these eleven students, together with their tutor Inmaculada Ortuño, "submerged" during the 2017-2018 academic year in a frantic investigation, which involved a laborious search in libraries and archives, and interviews with witnesses of the time, duly combined with the demands of the school year.

In its eleventh edition, EUSTORY has had the participation of more than 200 secondary and high school students from Spain, Portugal and Latin America with research that, under the theme 'Historical Heritage', delved into the value of heritage, the reasons for its conservation and destruction, and its influence on the environment of the participants.

The prizes will be awarded on October 26th at the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda (Malaga).
