Manifest Institutional International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25/11/2008)

MANIFESTO

Gender violence has become one of the leading causes of death and suffering among the female population.

In 2008, there are 68 women who have died as a result of the attacks produced by their husbands, partners or former partners.

Violence against women has suffered for many years silence, social insensitivity, misunderstanding, isolation, privacy, justification, submission and even denial of its existence.

Abusers are not just disturbed individuals.

There are many causes of maintenance of sexist stereotypes in our culture, and that support abuse.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we can say that there is greater public awareness and new legal tools to combat it.

Violence against women is a clear violation of human rights, embodies the highest social discrimination that women may experience and is a violation of the right to equality is claimed by the Spanish Constitution.

Freedom, dignity and equality of women suffer gender violence are broken almost daily and this requires, once again, claiming that society has unanimously removing this social evil that particularly affects women, but extends to the whole society.

Since the institutions are working towards creating a collective awareness of non-sexist education, where public and social image of women concerned with quality and respect.

It is a fact that violence against women does not respect borders and cultures, and economic levels.

Is present in times of armed conflict and in peacetime; and occurs at home, at work and on the street.

So today, our message is twofold: first, the desire and determination to eliminate all cultural barriers that stand for equality, peace, development and human rights, on the other hand, the decision to maintain the fight against gender violence through existing laws.

The real situation of our society demands and unavoidable tasks that require a collective commitment:

Show in any field, be it domestic, and street work, role models away from any form of violence.

Build self-confidence of girls, adolescents and women, to be able to reject those who do not respect.

And be aware of this serious problem to identify and expose those who with his attitude and discriminatory behavior, abuse and murder women who claim to love.

The fulfillment of these tasks we seek a less vulnerable and more rich in values of equality and social justice.
