The Info part in a European project to train designers of furniture tailored to seniors and people with disabilities (07/12/2015)

The Instituto de Fomento Region de Murcia participates in the project 'Vetaal', a community initiative led by the Technological Centre of Wood and Furniture of Yecla trying to define European standards for the design and construction of furniture adapted to people with, especially elderly and disabled people with disabilities.

Members of the project, which began in early 2014, met this week at the headquarters of Info in Murcia, to begin preparing the conclusions of these two years of work.

The director of Info, Javier Celdrán, said that this initiative is a response to the progressive aging of the population, which creates new challenges and needs.

"More and more companies working in this field, hence the need to train and provide a suitably qualified managers to design and manufacture a type of furniture that should fit parameters and some very specific security requirements" said the director of Info. This specialization is also added, "an opportunity for companies in the furniture industry in the region may generate new qualified jobs and stable job."

The project is part of the Lifelong Learning program 'Leonardo da Vinci' of the European Commission, it is developing a training route for students, designers, production workers and managers of companies, to help them acquire knowledge in technologies aimed at making this type of furniture, so that professional qualifications are adapted to the new demand for an integrated homeownership (Ambient Assisted Living-AAL) habitat.

To this end, there have been several pilot courses in Spain, Slovenia and Poland, which have been widely accepted.

As a result of these training activities, has designed a harmonized training program for all European countries that provides adaptation of the furniture in this increasingly large group, especially considering that in 2050 it is expected that the number of people in the EU over 65 years to grow by 70 percent and the number of people older than 80, 170 percent.

The project universities, government agencies and research centers in Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Poland, Austria and the United Kingdom participate.

These include the Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia (Info), the Technological Center of the Furniture and Wood in the Region of Murcia (CETEM), the Association of Wood and Furniture of Slovenia, the Chamber of Commerce Furniture craftsmen Poland, the Italian designer software Tecnologie Vitale Comunicazione (Viteco), the Slovenian Center for Education and Vocational Training, the University of Vienna and the University of Warsaw.
