IU-Greens proposes a plan to prevent juvenile gambling (04/07/2018)

It is not difficult to see how the betting sites proliferate, especially in the streets of cities.

More of the same happens on the Internet.

The game in general and online sports betting have grown in our country and, especially in our Region, by 140%.

And the more people play, the younger the people who do it.

In fact, there are more and more people under 18 who have some kind of pathological gambling.

According to a study conducted by the General Directorate of Public Health and Addictions among 64,000 young people in our country between 14 and 17 years old, 18% admit having made some kind of bet with money outside the Internet, that is, including lotteries, pools , bingos, casinos, the betting houses mentioned above (and that are the second option) and slot machines.

All this despite the fact that Law 13/2011, of May 27, regulating gambling, prohibits this activity with money in children under 18 years of age.

In addition, 7.4% admit having bet on the Internet and 11.7% refuse to answer the question, so it is also considered a percentage of children likely to have played.

This reality is affecting our country, the Region of Murcia and also our town.

What we wanted with this motion was to expose this problem so that Yeclana society becomes aware and try to propose a response from our municipality to prevent juvenile gambling.

But, once again, the Popular Party put the brake and asked to leave the motion on the table to study it in detail.

Apparently, the idea seems fine, but will study whether or not it has competences in the matter and to what extent.

Even so, we want to give you more information about the matter.

Advertising of online sportsbooks is present in all sports events, with only control filters.

These betting companies are even official sponsors of athletes and football teams.

In pages as visited as Daily Marca are increasingly present, but if there is a place covered by them is the World Cup that is celebrated these days.

During the publicity of the matches, advertisements are issued of betting houses where football stars such as Maradona and even former coach Vicente del Bosque appear, without forgetting actors as renowned as José Coronado.

All the population, without exception, is exposed to this media bombardment, whether young or old, people with gambling problems or minors.

And they see how their idols encourage gambling and betting as normal.

On the other hand, every time there are more mobile applications for betting, and although they use filters to access them, everyone has them at the click of a mouse.

In fact, if in the store of any mobile phone we put the word "bets", there are numerous free download applications with which you can participate and start in the game.

For all this, we believe that it is essential that public administrations begin to act on this reality and its possible problems.

There must be an answer as to legislation that controls this advertising or that is considered if it is correct to expose it in the mass media.

The Regional Government should launch once and for all the new plan against addictions, giving it additional resources.

We believe that from our town hall we should also give an answer, that is why our municipal group raises the following points of agreement that should be studied more in detail as requested by the Popular Party:

That from the Department of Youth and in coordination with the rest of councils and municipal services deemed appropriate, is drawn up as soon as possible a plan for the prevention of juvenile pathologies, all with the collaboration of the Ampas of educational centers and associations or local entities dedicated to this purpose.

Take the necessary police measures to prevent minors from going to the local games and on the other hand from the Department of Urban Planning to revise the rules to introduce a minimum distance between these places of betting and schools.

We hope that this proposal will finally go ahead.

And we will be very attentive to that it is fulfilled.

In addition, to carry it out we have had organizations or associations that work with addictions and that have transmitted their concern.

We also have the example of municipalities such as Lorca that already have advanced plans against juvenile gambling.

A plan that not only has to educate the youngest, but also the parents so that they are aware of this reality and can act in the best possible way.

The ultimate goal is to work and much prevention to avoid greater evils.
